If you're one of the millions of Americans who get their water from a well, proper maintenance is vital for ensuring that it stays in good condition and lasts a long time. According to Premiere Sales, wells have a typical lifespan of 30 to 50 years, but you may be able to make yours last even longer if you take good care of it. One vital step for maintaining your well is to have it inspected at least once a year. Here's what you can expect when you schedule a well inspection.
Your well inspector will begin by taking a look at various parts of your well, such as the wellhead, well cap, pump, pressure tank, and grout. This step won't take very long unless there is something visibly wrong with your well. If the inspector does notice problems, they'll recommend steps you can take to fix them or suggest replacement. Note that if there are any serious issues, the inspector may not continue the inspection until after you have them fixed.
Next, the inspector will collect a water sample from the tap inside your house and send it to a lab. The lab will test the water's pH levels, hardness, alkalinity, turbidity, mineral content, and bacteria content. You'll later receive a report detailing the results of the test and whether anything is wrong with your water.
In order to ensure that your well isn't at risk of running dry, the inspector will conduct a flow rate test after measuring the dimensions of the well. This test will show how many gallons of water your well produces in a minute. If the flow rate is too low, you might not have enough water to meet your daily needs, and the inspector may recommend repairs or replacement.
Frequent well inspections are critical for ensuring that your water is safe to drink and isn't in any danger of running out. If you haven't had your well inspected in a while or are preparing to sell your property, it's important to schedule a well inspection as soon as possible.
